Plant
Spirit Shaman with
Howard G. Charing
Introduction
Workshop & Course Programme 2008
“We are not talking about passive
agents of transformation, we are talking about an intelligence, a consciousness,
an alive and other mind, a spirit… Nature is alive and is talking
to us. This is not a metaphor”
Terrance McKenna
The magical partnership between shaman and teacher plant (or
ally) is one known to all cultures where plants are used as ‘medicine’ -
a term which implies a wide range of methods for working with nature
for empowerment, divination, reconnecting with the Earth, receiving
guidance, visions and information from the spiritual universe, as well
as what we in the West might regard as ‘healing’ (e.g.
the simple ingestion of a plant or herb with ‘scientifically-proven’ medicinal
qualities).
Plant Spirit Shaman

Involves
a series of workshops - from introductory
weekends to Amazon Retreat programmes - where
the participant forms a bond and a working
partnership with their plant allies to learn
the secrets of plant spirit medicine and the
gifts of nature.
Based on the forthcoming book, ‘Plant Spirit Shamanism’ available
in 2006 published by Inner Traditions, we work with plants and techniques
from Europe, and the Amazon, including ayahuasca, the legendary vine
of souls.
Two programmes are offered:

• Plant Spirit
Shaman: Communion with our Plant Allies - An extended weekend
programme involving an initiation into plant spirit medicine. (Feb
21st -25th and Oct 16th - 20th)
• Amazonian Medicine
Retreat: An opportunity to journey to Peru, where we work
with plant maestros, ayahuasca and san pedro shamans in an authentic
medicine experience.
Workshop programme facilitators
This series of explorations into Plant Spirit Medicine is led by Howard
G. Charing, with Charmaine Ferris, and Peter Prudden
Howard is a director of the Eagle’s Wing Centre for Contemporary
Shamanism, founded by Leo Rutherford, which is now celebrating its
21st anniversary. For the past nine years he has organised journeys
to the Amazon Rainforest to work with the ayahuasca shamans and the
sacred ‘jungle doctors’ (healing and visionary plants)
of this area. Howard has written numerous articles about the Amazonian
plant medicines, and has worked with some of the most respected shamans
in the region. He was baptised by the Shipibo Indians in the Amazon
and ritually initiated into the lineage of the maestros of the Rio
Napa community. For more information about Howard and his work, read Plant
Spirit Shamanism published by Destiny Books (USA).
